The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition containing the extract of a mixture of Stemona japonica root, Asparagus cochinchinensis Merr., Scutellaria baicalensis, Schisandra chinensis, Rehmannia glutinosa, Apricot kernel, and the bark of Paeonia suffruticosa Andrews and inhibiting the onset of inflammatory bowel disease caused by cigarette smoke, a food composition containing the same extract and preventing or overcoming the inflammatory bowel disease caused by cigarette smoke, and a method for suppressing the expression of inflammatory cytokines using the pharmaceutical composition. Since the pharmaceutical composition in the present invention contains Stemona japonica root, Asparagus cochinchinensis Merr., Scutellaria baicalensis, Schisandra chinensis, Rehmannia glutinosa, Apricot kernel, and the bark of Paeonia suffruticosa Andrews, the pharmaceutical composition decreases the expression level of MMP12, which is known to destroy the inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6, and MCP-1, elastin, and collagen, concomitant to the onset of the inflammatory bowel disease, thereby can be widely used for developing safe and effective medicine against the inflammatory bowel disease.
