Rail brake according to the invention comprises a rigid enclosure which is mounted on the crane down to the base end of the enclosure, disposed adjacent the rail on the upper rail. The top plate is mounted to the bottom of the upper end of the enclosure. Spring carriage is mounted on the bottom of the top plate for vertical movement within the enclosure. Springs are mounted between the spring and the carriage top plate so that the springs are compressed when the rise of the spring carriage. The brake shoe is mounted on the lower carriage. Actuators are mounted between the base end of the spring carriage and the enclosure. Height of the actuator will compress the spring and increase the brake shoe from the rail. Contraction allows the spring drives the brake shoe against a rail. Openings in the enclosure must allow replacement of the spring and actuator. The rise of the brake shoe provides inspection and maintenance.
