Suitable for use in a positive displacement machine (10), the piston and cylinder assembly which can minimize the power loss derived from the friction and fluid leakage is provided over a predetermined range of operating parameters. Piston 14 is arranged to enable reciprocation in a cylinder 16 having a uniform diameter. Piston 14 has a bearing surface which forms a gap in the radial direction of about 2% of the cylindrical bearing surface and the maximum diameter of the cylinder of the cylinder 16 (30). Diameter radial clearance forms a lubricating gap 26 and the hydrodynamic seal between the piston 14 and the cylinder 16. Piston 14 has a further alternate to the floor 34 and the valley 36 formed in the cylindrical shape nominal 28 of its bearing surface (30). Floor 34 and the bone 36 is aligned and spaced apart on the bearing surface 30 to form the wave form surface (32) along the entire axial length of the bearing surface (30).
