The CDMA communication system in a system and method for controlling transmission power during the establishment of channel uses the transmission of short codes from subscriber units to a base station during initial power ramp up. The short code is a sequence has to be detected by the base station a much shorter period than a conventional spreading code. It starts from a power level guaranteed to be lower than the power level required for detection by the ramp-up station. Subscriber unit is thereby rapidly increasing the transmission power while transmitting the short code repeatedly until a signal is detected by the base station. Once the base station detects the short code, it sends an indication to stop increasing the transmission power by subscriber units. The use of short codes limits power overshoot and interference to other subscriber stations, the base station allows the rapid spreading codes used by the subscriber unit can be synchronized.
