Exhaust system for a catalytic converter of an internal combustion engine comprises at least one catalytic element substrate disposed in a housing, the housing having a gas inlet and gas outlet. At least one catalyst element substrate is divided into a plurality of regions, or sections, regions are at least partially separated with respect to each other in order to prevent thermal flow. Regions are at least partially separated by a wall. The walls can include insulating material to reduce heat mobility in a radial outward. Each area defines a substantially discrete flow channels that connect them the inlet and the outlet so as to communicate fluids. Device may be compared with a conventional catalytic converter to rapidly than heating from a cold start.
