The present invention, chromium-relates to a process for the preparation of a supported olefin polymerization catalyst of the type. The fluidized bed of support particles is prepared in an inert carrier gas. Chromium (III) compound provides a supported catalyst component is added to the support particles flow. The supported catalyst component is activated at least a portion of the chromium (III) is converted to chromium (VI). Chromium (III) containing particles can be activated after the recovery from the fluidized bed or activated in a fluidized bed. The support particles can be treated in a fluid bed another treatment agent. The support particles may be pre-treated with a solution of a boron treating agent prior to incorporation of the support in a fluidized bed.
