PURPOSE: A device for processing a section overhead in an optical transmission network of an STM(Synchronous Transfer Module) and a method therefor are provided to extract STM-N operational overhead bytes by channels, and to insert the overhead bytes to a section overhead of an STM-16 format, then to output the section overhead to receiving optical transmission devices, thereby performing communication without interruption. CONSTITUTION: An STM demultiplexer(510) extracts substantially operated operational overhead bytes within a section overhead of an STM format according to each channel. An overhead multiplexer(520) multiplexes the extracted operational overhead bytes. An STM multiplexer(530) inserts the multiplexed operational overhead bytes into an unused region, within the section overhead. The STM demultiplexer(510) extracts the multiplexed operational overhead bytes from the section overhead. An overhead demultiplexer(550) demultiplexes the multiplexed operational overhead bytes. The STM multiplexer(530) inserts the operational overhead bytes into the section overhead.
