PURPOSE: A pointing apparatus and a method for calculating a pointer position are provided to move the position of the pointer in a convenient manner. CONSTITUTION: A pointing apparatus comprises a light source(10) having a movable position; a camera(11) for photographing the light emitted from the light source; an image processing unit for processing the image obtained from the camera, detecting the position of the light source, and calculating position coordinates of the pointer; and an optical splitter(15) for dividing the light emitted from the light source and permitting the light to be incident to the camera in first and second images. The light source includes a light source side polarizing plate(14) for polarizing the light emitted from the light source. The optical splitter includes a camera side first polarizing plate(16) mounted in the incidence section of the optical splitter and which has a polarization axis same with the polarization axis of the light source side polarizing plate; and a camera side second polarizing plate(16') having a polarization axis staggered by 90 degrees with respect to the light source side polarizing plate.
