PURPOSE: An automatically switching apparatus for an ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) switch and a method therefor are provided to automatically switch between switch boards composed in the ATM switch without losing data. CONSTITUTION: An operation state of a standby switch board is set up as a standby mode(251). It is discriminated whether a packet input command is received from an operating switch board(252). If the packet input command is received, an input buffer of the switch board is enabled and a packet is received(253). It is discriminated whether a packet output command is received from the operating switch board(254). If the packet output command is received, an output buffer of the switch board is enabled and a packet switched in the switch board is outputted to a back plane(255). The operated state of the switch board is converted from the standby mode into an operation mode(256).
