PURPOSE: A method for preparing a sulfonated crosslinked poly(vinyl aromatic) copolymer is provided, to obtain a strong acid cation exchange resin exhibiting an improved physical stability and free from the chlorinated-solvent contaminants. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of removing water from a crosslinked poly(vinyl aromatic) copolymer prepared by the aqueous suspension polymerization to prepare a dewatered copolymer with a residual moisture content of 3-35 % based on the weight of the dewatered copolymer; and sulfonating the dewatered copolymer in the presence of 95-105 % sulfuric acid, practically in the absence of an organic swelling solvent, at a temperature of 105-140 deg.C for 20 min to 20 hours. Preferably the poly(vinyl aromatic) copolymer is a styrene/ethylvinyl benzene/divinyl benzene copolymer comprising 1-50 % of a polymerized divinyl benzene monomer unit based on the weight of the crosslinked poly(vinyl aromatic) copolymer.
