PURPOSE: An overspeed detection device and method are provided to prevent a prime mover from stopping by the output from troubles of an overspeed detecting unit, and to be the reliability of the prime mover and the stability of the operation. CONSTITUTION: An overspeed detection device consists of a microcomputer(2000) and a contact point signal output unit(1000). The microcomputer is composed of an overspeed detecting unit(100), a speed detecting unit(200), a first comparing unit(300), a D/A converting unit(400), a third comparing unit(500), an operating unit(600), a second comparing unit(700), a signal output unit(800), a signal decision logic unit(900), an AND gate(1100), and a final signal output unit(1200). Plural overspeed detecting units(100) detect the overspeed of a prime mover(1300). The prime mover(1300) overspeed protection signal is output finally by combining the output signal of the signal output unit and the AND gate. The speed of the prime mover(1300) is controlled by the final output signal with the overspeed detecting unit, the speed detecting unit and the contact point signal output unit.
