PURPOSE: An optical recorder which has a basic pulse generating unit is disclosed. CONSTITUTION: The optical recorder comprises a basic pulse generating unit (60) which includes a leading end pulse generating circuit (2), a burst gate generating circuit (4) and a trailing end pulse generating circuit (6); a data length detection unit (61) which includes a front mark detection circuit (40), a front space detection circuit (41), a record mark detection circuit (42), a rear space detection circuit (43) and a rear mark detection circuit (44); a timing control unit (62) which includes a leading end pulse selection circuit (14), a leading end starting position setting circuit (15), a leading end pulse delay circuit (19), a trailing end pulse selection circuit (21), a trailing end starting position setting circuit (35) and a trailing end pulse delay circuit (25); a pulse synthesizing unit (63) which includes an AND gate (27) and an OR gate (36); and a laser driving unit (64) which includes an erasing current source (32), a recording current source (33) and a switch (34).
