The invention high mobility box 1 (HMGB1) protein is provided comprising a material that suppresses the ability to interact with natural killer (NK) cells, compositions and methods for regulating the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The treatment composition comprises an antibody and a drug, for example geulrisirijin binding to HMGB1. A method for detecting or monitoring the HIV infection, including the detection or quantification of a biological sample of HMGB1 or HMGB1-specific antibody.
