Portable system for detecting in real time the presence of the pathogens in biological samples employs a reagent for detecting the presence of a particular pathogen in a sample, and detecting the presence of a pathogen to release the detectable signal when the reagent reacts with the sample. Test cartridge has a reaction chamber for receiving the sample and reagent. The reaction chamber has a predetermined internal geometry, and at least one inner surface. By introducing a sample and the reagent into the test cartridge, the sample and the reagent are mixed. Testing unit accommodates a test cartridge, and a sensor for detecting the emitted detectable signal. Detection of the emitted detectable signal indicates the presence of a pathogen in a sample.
