A nitrogen oxide storage catalyst is used to remove nitrogen oxides from the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine that mainly operates under lean conditions, times. When these catalysts are used in diesel engines, there is a catalyst poisoning due to an increase in the sulfur content of the fuel during operation, which is reversible at high temperatures under the reduced exhaust gas conditions. In the case of a conventional NOx storage catalyst, and a temperature above 600 ℃ be obtained to a desulphurization. This is not always possible in a diesel vehicle having a nitrogen oxide storage catalyst in the bottom portion. The invention shows a way to reduce the desulfurization temperature of a conventional nitrogen oxide storage catalyst comprising a platinum component and at least one nitrogen oxide storage material. Basicity of the chemical environment of the platinum is lowered, while the NOx storage material can be present unchanged. Further, by decreasing the desulfurization temperature caused by application of the method it is shown an improved nitrogen oxide storage catalyst.
