Embodiments of the present invention includes a composite article and method for producing such an article including at least a first region and a second region. The first region may include a first composite material, wherein the first region includes a cubic carbides of less than 5% by weight, and a second area weight may include a second composite material, wherein the second compound material is different from the first composite material according to at least one feature. Composite article can further comprise at least one coolant channel. In certain embodiments, the first and second composite material may comprise an individual hard particles in a binder to, in which hard particles are independently a carbide, nitride, boride, silicide, oxide, and at least one of its solid solution and including, the binder comprises at least one metal selected from cobalt, nickel, iron and alloys thereof. In certain embodiments, the first composite material and the second composite material may individually comprises a metal carbide such as tungsten carbide in a binder.
