The present invention relates to microfibrillar polysaccharide comprising the step of separating layers with the polysaccharide mechanically so that the oxidizing agent and at least a step of processing the polysaccharide, microfibrillar polysaccharide is formed from an aqueous suspension containing a transition metal . The present invention also relates to microfibrillar polysaccharide obtainable by the method.
