A method for preparing (Z)-7-chloro-((S)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxamido)-2-heptenoic acid as an intermediate for the preparation of cilastatin is provided to allow the isomer impurities to be removed effectively and to improve purity. A method for preparing (Z)-7-chloro-((S)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxamido)-2-heptenoic acid comprises the steps of selectively hydrolyzing ethyl (E)-7-chloro((S)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxamide)-2-heptenoate from an E, Z isomer mixture of ethyl 7-chloro-((S)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxamido)-2-heptenoate by using an acid; hydrolyzing ethyl (Z)-7-chloro((S)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxamide)-2-heptenoate by using an alkali; and purifying it.
