Disk discriminating method and disc discrimination device of an optical disk system are disclosed. Disk discriminating method in an optical disk system according to the present invention includes a frequency tracking error signal measuring step and disc type determination step. The tracking error signal frequency measuring step is to measure the frequency of the tracking error signal of the tracking control for determining the target disk. The disc type determination step is to determine the type of the disc in response to the frequency of the tracking error signal. Disc discrimination method of an optical disk system and the disc discrimination device according to the invention has the advantage that by determining the type of the disc using a frequency of the tracking error signal, to reduce the error in the disk discrimination process.
