基板の表面に凹状の鋳型を形成する工程と、ドーピング材料を含有する雰囲気中でダイヤモンドを前記基板上にヘテロエピタキシャル成長させる工程とを有する製造方法とする。前記基板の凹状の鋳型の斜面の結晶構造は、立方晶系結晶方位(111)を有し、前記ドーピング材料がリンであることが望ましい。また、前記基板は、Siであり、前記鋳型の斜面がSi(111)面であることが好ましい。本発明のダイヤモンド電子放出素子は、表面に突起を有するダイヤモンドであって、突起1の斜面がダイヤモンド(111)を含む面であり、突起でない平坦な部分2は、(100)面もしくは(110)面以外の面方位と粒界とを含む。
