PURPOSE:To make it possible to obtain a suitable reaction and a restoring force by providing such an arrangement that a turn return instructing section delivers a turn returning signal during turning of a vehicle so that a return force resisting a steering force is effected in accordance with the turn returning signal. CONSTITUTION:In a motor driven type power steering apparatus, a drive control section 2 controls the rotating direction and rotary torque of a motor 1 in accordance with an instruction signal based upon an output signal from a torsional torque sensor 31 for detecting a torsional torque of a steering system. The drive control section 2 receives instruction signals from an assist instructing section 3, a steering angle return instructing section 4, a phase compensation instructing section 5, a steering angle phase compensation instructing section 6 and a turn return instructing section 7. During turning of a vehicle, the turn return instructing section 7 delivers a turn returning signal having such a characteristic that its absolute value increases in accordance with a lateral acceleration produced in the vehicle, and the drive control section 2 is operated in accordance with the signal so as to effect a return force resisting the steering force, thereby it is possible to obtain a suitable reaction.
