NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is -CH2- or group of formula II; R is 1-4C alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl). EXAMPLE:Methyl cyanoacetoxyacetate. USE:Useful as a synthetic intermediate of instantaneous adhesive, alpha-cyanacrylate. Various alpha-cyanoacrylates derived from the compound of the present invention are free of irritant smell, handleable easly, applicable without causing whitening, and give a polymerized and cured product having improved brittleness. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared by reacting cyano- acetic acid with an alpha-chlorofatty acid ester of formula III in a solvent such as acetonitrile in the presence of triethylamine.
