NEW MATERIAL:The titled compound of formula I .
EXAMPLE: (1R,2R,5R)-4,8-Dimethylbicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-7-en-2-ol.
USE: A perfumery substance having strong menthol-like smell, and expected to be useful as perfumery.
PROCESS: 3-(4-Methyl-3-cyclohexenyl)butylaldehyde of formula II is made to react preferably in a solvent in the presence of an acid catalyst at 0W100°C to effect the intramolecular cyclization and obtain 4,8-dimethylbicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-7-en- 2-ol of formula I wherein the dotted line is double bond. The double bond in the ring is catalytically hydrogenated preferably in a solvent, in the presence of a catalyst such as Pd/C at 0W150°C under hydrogen pressure of 0W5 atm to obtain 4,8-dimethylbicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-2-ol of formula I wherein the dotted line is single bond.
