PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject new derivative useful as a raw material or the like for medicines, agrochemicals, perfumes or liquid crystals by carrying out the asymmetric intermolecular-intramolecular tandem nitroaldol reaction of a specific aldehyde compound with nitromethane in the presence of a metallic complex of optically active binaphthols with a rare earth compound. SOLUTION: This new optically active bicyclo derivative is represented by formula I [R is a 1-3C alkyl; Y is O, S or H2 ; (m) is an integer of 2-4; (n) is an integer of 2-5] [e.g. (3aR,4R,5S,7aS)-3a,5-dihydroxy-7a-methyl-4-nitro-3 a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-1-indanone] and is useful as a raw material or the like for medicines, agrochemicals, perfumes and liquid crystal intermediates. The bicyclo derivative is obtained by carrying out the asymmetric intermolecular- intramolecular tandem nitroaldol reaction of an aldehyde compound represented by formula II with nitromethane in the presence of a metallic complex prepared by reacting an optically active binaphthol or its derivative with a rare earth compound.
