PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new phenylcyclohexane compound useful as a liquid crystal medium for liquid crystal phase, in particular nematic phase having positive dielectric anisotropy. SOLUTION: This new phenylcyclohexane compound is shown by formula I ((n) is 0-7; Q to Q are each H or CH3 ; (r) is 0-5; A is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or the like; X is Cl, CF3 or the like; Y and Z are each H), e.g. 4-trans-4-(1-butenyl)cyclohexyl-1,2-difluorobenzene. The compound of formula I is obtained by converting an aldehyde compound of formula II by Wittig process using the corresponding phosphonium salt. Use of the compound of formula I affords liquid crystal phase with wide nematic range, high nematic formability even at lowered temperatures, high chemical stability, conspicuous ε⊥involving positive dielectric anisotropy, and the low temperature dependency on threshold voltage and/or low optical anisotropy.
