PURPOSE: To stably obtain a sheet of desired color with fastness to water by imparting a fibrous sheet-like product with a cationic direct dye solution followed by treating the resultant product with an anionic substance dispersion containing a water repellent. CONSTITUTION: First, a fibrous sheet-like material comprising fibers or pulped fibers having affinity with direct dye such as cotton linter or kraft pulp is impregnated or coated with an aqueous solution of a cationic direct dye having azo compound residue and cationic group in its molecule and capable of forming an intramolecular or intermolecular salt, and then dried. Subsequently, the resultant sheet-like material is impregnated or coated with a dispersion containing an anionic polymer such as CMC, an anionic substance such as tannic acid or a derivative therefrom, and an anionic or nonionic water repellent such as a fluororesin capable of forming a stable dispersion together with the above compounds, and then dried, thus accomplishing the water-repelling and dye-setting treatment of the resultant color sheet.
