Disclosed is a semiconductor light emitting element characterized in having, in a light extraction layer, a photonic crystal periodic structure, which is a periodic structure configured of two systems (structural bodies) respectively having different refractive indexes, said periodic structure having the interface between the two systems (structural bodies) satisfying the conditions of Bragg scattering, and also having a photonic band gap.
