PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an automatic transmission, preventing the occurrence of double engagement. SOLUTION: The control device for the automatic transmission comprises a shift lever 61, a manual valve 60, a line pressure control valve 42, a reverse selector valve 46, a fail-safe valve 18 and a plurality of frictional elements. When a trouble occurs in the reverse selector valve 46 during the selection of a "D" range of the shift lever 61 and the output pressure of the reverse selector valve 46 is changed over similarly to the case of the selection of a "R" range of the shift lever 61, drain pressure instead of line pressure is introduced as directive pressure from the reverse selector valve 46 to the fail-safe valve 18. As a result, even when the trouble occurs in the reverse selector valve 46 during the "D" range of the shift lever 61, there is no simultaneous engagement of 2-4/B3 and H/C2 and L/C4 with one another.
