The rotor 451 is composed of a forward rotor 451a polarized to an N pole, and a back-side rotor 451b polarized to an S pole, and is attached to a rotating shaft while being relatively shifted by 1/2 pitch such that a gear tooth provided around the back-side rotor 451b is positioned between gear teeth provided around the forward rotor 451a. Excitation phases of respective poles 453-456 are changed successively, and hence the rotor 451 is rotated. In this case, when starting acceleration, one phase excitation is performed to the stepping motor 442 and an excitation period of one phase excitation during the acceleration period is shorter than an excitation period of immediate bi-phase excitation.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 89
