To provide a cleaning method that reduces muddy water generated by cleaning a filter material.SOLUTION: The cleaning method is applied in a filter press device 1 that separates and removes particulates in muddy water from water, and cleans a filter fabric 9 that allows water to permeate and inhibits particulates from permeating. The method comprises an ice-accretion step of generating ice on the filter fabric 9 and a deicing step of removing ice from the filter fabric 9. In the ice-accretion step, particulates captured by grains of the filter fabric 9 are taken in to generate ice. In the deicing step, ice having the particulates taken therein is broken and then dropped out as ice chips T from the filter fabric 9, and removed from the filter fabric 9 while containing the particulates.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
