The present invention, the cause of the common cold is when a virus, provides a method of treating the common cold and related secondary diseases in human subjects and prevention. The method to the nasal passages of a human subject, at ambient temperature, applying an effective amount of a pharmaceutical formulation comprising a povidone-iodine (PVP-I) at a concentration of less than higher 2.5% than 0.10% w / v wherein at least 50% of the PVP-I is equal to or not bound to the liposome or other particulate carriers.
