Metal oxide semiconductor based toxic gas detector (10) is provided. Metal oxide semiconductor based detector comprises a metal oxide semiconductor-based gas sensor having an electrical characteristic that varies depending on the concentration of toxic gas (30). Measuring circuit (28) is coupled to the metal oxide semiconductor based gas sensor (30), and is configured to measure the electrical characteristics, and provides a digital indication of the measured electrical properties. Controller (22) is coupled to the measurement circuit (28), it is configured to provide a toxic gas output based on the digital indication value. Controller (22) is also configured to provide a diagnostic output related to a gas sensor (30) of the metal oxide semiconductor based on the basis of the variation of the electrical characteristics on the measured time.
