PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal alignment layer to which alignment property is efficiently imparted with a small irradiation dose of polarized light and which is excellent in controlling alignment and a pretilt angle of a liquid crystal and has a high voltage holding rate (VHR) and excellent coating property, and to provide a polymer used for the liquid crystal alignment layer, a compound constituting the polymer, a liquid crystal display element using the liquid crystal alignment layer, and an optical anisotropy material using the polymer.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal alignment layer includes a compound expressed by general formula (I) or a polymer of the compound as a structural member.
