PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a high-frequency ignition device which includes step for: supplying an electrical energy for generating corona discharge by using a voltage pulse to a high-frequency ignition device; measuring a series of measured values of electrical variables between the voltage pulses; and evaluating the measured values for detecting defective functions.SOLUTION: The measured values are evaluated by determining a characteristic variable concerning a fluctuation width of the measured values and comparing the determined characteristic variable with a threshold, or a frequency spectrum of the series of measured values is calculated by using the conversion of the series of measured values, and when exceeding the threshold, an error signal is generated.
