PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for transducing non-insulin producing cells into a population of insulin producing cells. SOLUTION: The population of insulin producing cells is made by a process comprising bringing non-insulin producing cells into contact with a growth factor selected from the group consisting of Exendin-4, which is a peptide produced in the salivary glands of the Gila monster lizard, growth factors having amino acid sequences substantially homologous to Exendin-4, and fragments thereof.
