PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ship coping with possible tightening of exhaust emission regulations in a particular marine area under the exhaust gas emission regulations in the near future and to provide a method for operating the ship. SOLUTION: The ship includes: a four-cycle engine 3 for driving a generator 10; a two-cycle engine 2 for driving a propeller shaft 6 having one end to which a propulsive propeller 7 is mounted; a denitrification apparatus 4 passing only exhaust gas generated in the four-cycle engine 3; and a shaft motor or a shaft generator motor 8 serving as an electric motor for rotating the propeller 7 and the propeller shaft 6 by receiving supply of electric power from the generator 10 or a separately provided power-generating equipment.
