PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous coating composition using calcium or magnesium as an ionic cross-linking agent.
SOLUTION: The aqueous coating composition contains a polymer. The polymer contains (a) at least one of a calcium ion and a magnesium ion, and (b) a polymer residue comprising (i) 0.5-7 wt.% of at least one kind of monomer having a log stability constant of 0.3-4 for calcium or magnesium, (ii) 5-15 wt.% of a methacrylic acid, and (iii) 0.2-3 wt.% of at least one kind of cross-linking agent. In the polymer, Tg is 50-110°C.
