PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide novel polypeptides having glucanase, e.g., endoglucanase, mannanase, xylanase activity or a combination of these activities, polynucleotides encoding them, a method of designing new enzymes, and a method of use thereof. SOLUTION: The polynucleotides or polypeptides have at least about 50% of sequence identity over at least about 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 75, or 100 residues of a specific basic sequence.
