PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous emulsion excellent in initial adhesion at low temperature, normal-state adhesion, pot life and production stability and an adhesive exhibiting excellent adhesion to wood. SOLUTION: The aqueous emulsion is characterized in that a polymer (a) of amine salt, ammonia salt or monovalent metal salt of styrenesulfonic acid and polyvinyl alcohol (b) are used as protective colloid and the aqueous emulsion is obtained by polymerizing a monomer by a polymerization initiator and has 0.6-1.2 μm average particle size.
