PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer article having a modified surface. SOLUTION: The polymer article including a membrane with a surface having a desired chemical functional group on the surface is prepared by surface segregation of a branched component blended in a compatible matrix base component and the branched component has the desired chemical functional group. The hydrophilic surface is especially prepared by the surface segregation of a branched hydrophilic copolymer blended in the polymer matrix. A thermodynamic mechanism for the segregation of a hydrophilic chemical species to the surface and a means for achieving a high surface coverage of a hydrophilic moiety are obtained by using the branched molecular structure. The branched hydrophilic copolymer can be defined by a random copolymer containing two or more kinds of methacrylate or acrylate monomers and at least one kind of the monomers is characterized as a short hydrophilic side chain.
