PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for drawing an optical fiber which can suppress emission of radiant heat to the outside of the apparatus when a preform is heated and melted for drawing. SOLUTION: In a method for drawing an optical fiber comprising suspending a preform in a heating furnace and heating and melting the same, a means 7 for reflecting infrared light and/or visible light is provided on the upper end of the preform or a dummy 2 connected to the upper part thereof. The means 7 for reflecting infrared light and/or visible light include a mirror made of a refractory metal, a multilayer mirror. an evaporated film formed by evaporating a refractory metal onto the upper end surface of the dummy, and a multilayer mirror integrally molded with the upper end surface of the dummy.
