PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alicyclic tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride capable of being used as a raw material monomer for polyimides which do not absorb UV rays in the UV ray region, have high light transmissivity, improved processability and excellent solubility in solvents, and is used for optical materials such as liquid crystal orientation films, color filters and optical communication optical wave-guiding paths, to provide its production method, and to provide its polyimide. SOLUTION: A (substituted) tricyclo[4.2.1.0 2,5 ]nonane-3-endo, 4-endo, 7-endo, 8-endo-tetracarboxylic acid-3:4, 7:8-dianhydride represented by formula [1] [R 1 and R 2 are each independently H or a 1 to 10C alkyl; R 4 is a divalent organic group; (m) is an integer].
