PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To permit relative individualization of a hologram which is employed in a particular security use, to protect data and documents as much as possible, and, at the same time, enable reduction in the cost of continuous production of reference holograms. SOLUTION: It includes a first step of producing a master having a diffracted structure, and, after the first step and in the steps for producing the optically variable element, a step of irreversibly changing the appearance of the reference information which is represented by the diffracted structure, so that a series of the data carriers or a sub-set of a series of the data carriers are individualized.
