A timing mechanism (42) for a variable displacement pump (10) that includes a swashplate (24) and a housing (14), is disclosed. A timing link (50) includes first and second ends (52, 54) connected to a middle portion (56), the first end configured to be disposed in an opening (58) of the swashplate, and the second end configured to be disposed in an opening (60) in the housing. A bearing cage (48) is configured to be disposed between the swashplate and the housing, the bearing cage defining a slot (62) in which the middle portion of the timing link is disposed, the slot having a constant orientation relative to the bearing cage and contacting the middle portion of the timing link.
