A bone plate system for the internal fixation of a fractured bone includes a metal plate defining an arrangement of holes, at least one of the holes being a threaded hole. A drill guide has a body, an axial bore through the body sized for guiding a drill, an internal proximal element within the bore at the proximal end of the body for engagement with a tool for removal of the drill guide from the threaded hole, and threads at a distal end of the body for engagement with the threaded holes, the guide removably preassembled into the at least one threaded hole. An insertion tool has a cylindrical body defining an axial bore, the bore sized to stably receive a K-wire, the body having a proximal manual gripping portion and a distal insertion portion. The distal insertion portion has a cross-sectional diameter sized for slidable insertion into the axial bore of the drill guide with sufficient frictional engagement so as to permit the insertion tool to be used as a handle to manipulate the plate, but not of such large cross-sectional diameter so as to prevent removal of the insertion tool from the axial bore of the drill guide under manual force. The insertion portion has a length approximating a length of the drill guide along a longitudinal axis of the drill guide.
