The invention relates to an installation and method for the preparation of a mat of continuous filaments from at least one roving by projecting same onto a conveyor belt. The invention comprises the following steps consisting in: unwinding from the exterior at least one roving bobbin which is supported on a shaft, the unwinding speed being imposed by a motor that actuates the bobbin directly such that the linear speed of the unwound roving is constant; passing the roving through a nozzle, whereby the roving is passed through an inlet and, subsequently, an outlet of the nozzle, said nozzle also being equipped with a transverse inlet for at least one fluid which is directed mainly towards the outlet of the nozzle, thereby producing a tension towards the bottom of the roving and causing said roving to divide; and projecting the roving-forming filaments onto the conveyor belt using an oscillatory movement. The invention can be used to produce continuous filament mats at great speed with little or no roving breakage, owing to the fact that the roving is only subjected to a low tension which is produced at the nozzle by the divider fluid.
