A method is described for setting a disc speed in a disc drive apparatus (3) which is in data transfer communication (7) with a host system (2). According to the invention, at least one operation mode parameter is taken into account. If the host system (2) is operating in a streaming mode, the disc speed is set so as to adapt a disc/drive transfer rate (DDTR) to a drive/host transfer rate (DHTR), whereas, if the host system (2) is not operating in a streaming mode, the disc speed is set to a value as high as possible.
