The invention relates to a method for controlling and evaluating at least one sensor device (4) shared by a plurality of applications, especially passenger assistance/passenger protection applications in means of transportation, comprising the following steps: detecting defined means of transport parameters (3) by means of a situation detection device (2) for detecting the situation of the means of transport with respect to its surroundings; inquiring the means of transport situation by means of a control device (1) linked with the situation detection device (2); and activating an application corresponding to the means of transport situation by means of the control device (1).
