The present invention provides a lifting apparatus (10) which, in use, is located adjacent a walled container, for example, a skip, the lifting apparatus (10) including a body portion (11), support means (12) which, in use, can support a load; and mechanical means for vertically lifting the support means (12) from a first position to a second elevated position such that on reaching the second elevated position the load can be tipped into the walled container.
