In a modularly constructed longitudinal midbody (16) of a double-hulled tanker (10), each module (12) is provided, along the vessel centerline, with a prefabricated subassembly (40) including a keel portion (46) of the double hull structure, and a pipe tunnel (48) containing virtually all equipment, piping and nonstructural components (62-80) required to be installed below the vessel's upper deck (58) to serve the cargo tanks (50) and ballast tanks (56) within the respective module (12). Each subassembly (40) extends throughout the length of the respective module (12) and respective of its features are connectable at the module (12) ends with the comparable features of adjoining modules (12). The subassembly (40) may serve as the base for a longitudinal bulkhead (34).
